Birthday Striped Quilt - Doing Splendid

Birthday Striped Quilt

Striped Quilt at DoingSplendid.comIn our family, the 8th birthday is very important! So far, when my kids have turned 8 years old, I have made them a quilt to help celebrate this special birthday! A couple of months our second child turned 8 years old and this is his striped quilt.

He picked out all the colors, so I knew that he would like it. Yellow, red, and orange have been his favorite colors for years, so I was sure that is what he was going to choose. The quilt that I made for our daughter was a little more involved, and I’m not the best quilter in the world, so I knew that this one would have to be a little more simple. I don’t think there are too many quilts this big that are easy, but this one was a little bit better.

I made it a twin size (68×90), so he could put it on his bed. Each of the strips in the middle are 6 inches wide by the length of the fabric, which I believe is about 42 inches. The red border is 14 inches wide all the way around. I chose the backing fabric. It is hard to find a fabric with this color combination in a boyish type print! I think this one turned out great though!

Striped Quilt at DoingSplendid.comTo quilt it, I used this idea using painter’s tape as a guide. I thought it worked pretty well. I think next time I do this I will use an even wider tape, so I don’t have to make quite so many lines! 🙂 I plan on doing this same pattern for our next two boys, just in different colors. I think that will be fun!

Striped Quilt at DoingSplendid.com I had some extra fabric so I made a pillowcase to match! And no, I didn’t iron it before I took the picture! 🙂 It is now on my son’s bed and I think he likes it! I think it makes him feel pretty special to have something that I made just for him.

I love your quilt. I’m not a real quilter but I’ve made a couple of blankets for my boys. I love the idea of using painter’s tape for a sewing guide.
